UM, FIRST OF ALL, I JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE ABLE TO ATTEND THE HOLIDAY BANQUET.

UM, I KNOW AT LEAST TWO OF YOU WERE, AND I APOLOGIZE IF I DIDN'T GET TO SAY HELLO TO ANYONE ELSE THAT WAS THERE.

UM, BUT HOPEFULLY YOU WERE ABLE TO KIND OF EXPERIENCE, UM, THE STAFF LEVEL AND KIND OF JUST SEE A LITTLE SNEAK PEEK INTO, UM, HOW WE, UM, MOVE AND OPERATE AS A STAFF.

SO IT WAS REALLY, UM, FANTASTIC TO HAVE YOU PHYSICALLY THERE.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAD BROCHURES JUST FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T MAKE IT, UM, THAT KIND OF LISTED OUT THE NAMES OF EVERYONE WHO SERVED ON THE COMMISSION.

AND THEN I BELIEVE, UM, YOUR CHAIR SUBMITTED A VERY LOVELY, UM, WRITE UP ABOUT WHAT THE COMMISSION HAS DONE SO FAR.

SO I JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR ONGOING WORK AND SUPPORT, UM, NOT ONLY FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF THE CITY, BUT ALSO FOR THE STAFF.

LIKE, WE DEFINITELY SEE IT AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

I EVEN THE THE GEN AREA THAT, THAT IS A, THAT IS A REALLY UNIQUE SPOT AND KIND OF HAVE SOME IDEAS OF HOW TO, YOU KNOW, LOOKING IN THAT BUILDING AND HAVING SOME IDEAS OF HOW THAT THAT BUILDING ITSELF CAN KIND OF GENERATE SOME, SOME FUNDS FOR THE CITY OF HARLEM WAS, IT WAS A REALLY, UH, GREAT EVENING.

SO I, I DO APPRECIATE THE INVITE IN, APPRECIATE THE, UH, IT WAS VERY CHRISTMASY AND ENJOYED BINGO .

BUT, BUT FOR TODAY, RIGHT NOW, THE SUMMARY IS THAT THE HUDDLE CITIZENS UNIVERSITY, WE HAD A VERY ENGAGED, VERY, UH, DIVERSE GROUP.

PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE JUST GROUPS OF PEOPLE AND HUDDLE THAT I'VE EVER SEEN.

AND WE, WE WERE, UM, COGNIZANT OF THAT WHEN WE LOOKED AROUND THE TABLE IN THE ROOM.

AND ESSENTIALLY WE, WE WENT THROUGH THE GAMUT OF, YOU KNOW, CITY MANAGER'S, OFFICE POLICE, AND OUR EMERGENCY SERVICES CODE LIBRARY, LIKE EVERY KIND OF PUBLIC SERVICE THAT WE SEE AND DON'T SEE AS CITIZEN HUDDLE, LIKE THE WATER WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT, RIGHT? WE GOT TO SEE WHERE THEY'RE GOING, WHY THEY PLACE EM, WHERE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, UH, PROTECTION OF OUR, UH, NATURAL RESOURCES.

AND THINK THAT THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY THAT I COULD SUMMARIZE IS THAT OUR CITY STAFF, MY BACKGROUND IS IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT TRAINING, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, UM, A LOT OF VERY, LIKE IN DEPTH.

I'VE DONE A LOT OF, UM, FACILITATION OF LEADERSHIP GROUPS AND TRAINING AND, UM, WHAT WHAT STRUCK ME THE MOST ABOUT EACH PRESENTER, HOW THEY TALKED ABOUT THEIR WORK AND THE THINGS THAT THEY DO, IS THAT OUR CITY STAFF, ALL OF THEM SEEM TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT THEIR JOB DESCRIPTIONS REQUIRED THEM TO DO.

MM-HMM .

AND THEY REALLY ALL DEMONSTRATED A STRONG PASSION FOR THE WORK THEY DO.

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED.

AND SO WERE MY FELLOW CITIZENS IMPRESSED WITH HOW MUCH CARE AND TIME WENT INTO THE WAY THEY TALK.

THEY SPOKE ABOUT THEIR WORK, THE LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM AND UNDERSTANDING THEY HAD

FOR THE WORK THAT THEY DO, NOT JUST OPERATIONALLY, BUT ALSO HOW IT MATTERS TO THE CITY AND HOW THEY BROKE IT DOWN AND ANSWERED OUR QUESTIONS.

UM, AND I THINK THAT IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT, UM, ASK TO THINK ABOUT WHEN WE ARE CONSIDERING WHO WE, UM, HOW WE MOVE THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY AND HOW, HOW WE WANNA PEOPLE IN CONVERSATIONS THAT WE RECOGNIZE THAT WITH THE CITY STAFF, THEY DO THE ACTUAL HARD WORK OF HOW WE ACCESS OUR RESOURCES, WHO HAS ACCESS, HOW OFTEN, WHY SETTING THOSE TIMELINES, MAKING SURE THAT THE BUDGETS ARE BEING MET, MAKING SURE THAT THE RIGHT PEOPLE ARE IN FIT, THAT THE RIGHT TRAININGS ARE HAPPENING, THAT THE RIGHT OVERSIGHT IS HAPPENING WITH THEIR WORK.

THEY WERE VERY TRANSPARENT ABOUT IT AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH, UM, THE LEVEL OF, UM, A DEPTHNESS THAT THEY HAD WITH THE WORK THAT THEY PRESENTED.

SO I WOULD RECOMMEND, UM, THAT ANYBODY WHO'S INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THAT STEP BEHIND THE SCENES AND HOW THIS ALL COMES TOGETHER, COMPLETE THAT COURSE.

UM, AND I'M HAPPY TO ALSO SUBMIT MY WRITTEN KIND OF SUMMARY OF THAT COMMITTEE TO THE COMMISSION.

AND ALSO HE COMMENTED THAT HE APPRECIATED, UM, GOING TO TALK TO HIM.

HE SAID HE DID SAY NO ONE ELSE FROM ANY COMMISSION HAD EVER GOTTEN.

SO THAT WAS, THAT WAS GOOD.

UM, ALSO MET WITH COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER SHAY, I DON'T KNOW IF SHE COMES OUT HER NAME.

YOUNG, YOUNG, YOUNG.

AND SHE IS VERY HELPFUL.

UM, SHE PRESENTED, UM, THE YEAR IN REVIEW ALSO THE COMMUNICATIONS WORK PLAN FOR 2025.

AND, UM, IT HAS OUR US IN THERE, LIKE WHERE WE FIT IN AS THE, UM, PILLAR OF QUALITY OF LIFE.

AND SHE WILL BE ATTENDING THE MEETING THAT WE WILL HAVE IN FEBRUARY.

SO SHE'S GONNA GO OVER EVERYTHING WITH US, WHICH IS, IS REALLY GREAT.

UM, CHRISTIE MENTIONED THE STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION, WHICH, YOU KNOW, WE WILL HAVE ON THE 25TH.

SO WHAT I'M GONNA DO FOR THIS YEAR, 2024, THIS WILL BE FOR 2025.

UM, SO WHAT I'M GONNA DO IS I'M GONNA PREPARE A YEAR IN REVIEW OF THE DIVERSITY COM, UH, COMMISSION, AND I'LL LET EVERYONE READ IT.

AND, YOU KNOW, SO I'LL SEND IT TO CHRISTIE TO HAVE EVERYONE READ IT, JUST TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T FORGET EVERYTHING.

'CAUSE WE WANNA PRESENT IT TO THE CITY COUNCIL.

AND, UM, YOU KNOW, I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE THAT WE COVER EVERYTHING.

SO IF WHEN YOU GET IT, PLEASE LET HER KNOW THAT YOU GOT IT.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO REVISIT AND MODIFY AS THE WORLD AND AS THE COMMUNITY CHANGES, UH, AND WE STARTED WITH FOUR FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES THAT, YOU KNOW, THIS PLAN'S GOING TO EVOLVE AND WE'RE GONNA GET TO THE NEXT STEP OF HAVING SPECIFIC ACTIONS TO SUPPORT THE PLAN.

THAT WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT A-D-E-I-B PLAN, IT DOESN'T STAND ALONE.

IT HAS TO FULLY SUPPORT AND BE INTEGRATED WITH THE CITY OF HU'S OVERALL STRATEGIC PLAN.

AND THAT'S A LOT OF STAKE.

BOTH, YOU KNOW, MUNICIPALITIES AND EVEN BUSINESSES DO, IS THEY KIND OF LOOK AT DEIB AS A NICE THING TO DO ON THE SIDE, AND THEY DON'T INTEGRATE IT AND CONNECT IT TO THE OVERALL STRATEGY.

UH, IN STRATEGIC PLAN, WE ALSO DEFINE WHAT WE MEAN BY THOSE FOUR WORDS, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION AND BELONGING.

AND THAT WE NEED THE DETERMINATION THAT SHOULD BE A HOLISTIC PLAN AND INCLUDE BOTH THE WHOLE COMMUNITY OF HATO AS WELL AS INTERNAL CITY PRACTICES AND EMPLOYEES.

AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO GO OVER THE FIVE INITIAL PRIORITY AREAS, BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO BUILD THE PLAN AROUND, YOU KNOW, ESTABLISHING AN ONGOING SUSTAINABLE, SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURE.

SO THIS WORK CAN CONTINUE.

WE NEED TO ASSURE THAT THERE'S FULL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND ALL THE CITIZENS ARE AWARE OF THIS AND WANNA PARTICIPATE AND SUPPORT IT, THAT WE ALSO WORK INTERNALLY TO MAKE SURE THAT CITY MANAGER AND THE ENTIRE CITY STAFF ARE ENGAGED IN DEIB, LOOKING AT ALL OF THEIR JOB ROLES THROUGH DEIB LENSES THAT WE HAVE TO FOCUS ON.

ALSO, ECONOMIC GROWTH AND EMPOWERMENT OF DIVERSE CITIZENS, DIVERSE BUSINESSES.

YOU KNOW, CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE CORPORATIONS WHO VALUE DIVERSITY WILL SEE THAT WE HAVE AN, AN EXCELLENT DIVERSE WORKFORCE WANNA MOVE HERE.

AND ALSO CONTINUING TO GROW A CITYWIDE CULTURE OF COMMUNITY INCLUSION AND BELONGING.

AND SO WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO NOW IS WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN, BECAUSE THE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN SHOULD ADDRESS THESE FIVE PRIORITY AREAS.

IN OTHER WORDS, WE NEED TO TAKE THESE FIVE AREAS AND SAY, OKAY, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO IN EACH OF THESE AREAS? SO WE ALSO LIKE TO START WITH THIS FOUNDATIONAL STATEMENT, UH, THAT CAME FROM, UH, THE MASSACHUSETTS MUNICIPAL DEI COALITION GUIDE.

THEY SAY, FOR IT TO BE SUCCESSFUL HAS TO BE TREATED AS A COLLECTIVE EFFORT ACROSS THE MUNICIPALITY.

THIS IS BECAUSE DEIB WORK IS NOT A SINGLE POLICY OR ACTION THAT CAN SOLVE DISCRIMINATION, OPPRESSION, OR INJUSTICE.

INJUSTICE.

IT'S A MINDSET THAT A SET OF BEHAVIORS THAT MUST BE PRACTICED OVER AND OVER IN EVERY DEPARTMENT FOREVER.

AND TREATING DEIB WORK AS A COLLECTIVE EFFORT WILL ENSURE THAT THESE BEHAVIORS ARE TAKING ROOT THROUGHOUT AN ORGANIZATION.

IT WILL MEAN WHEN ONE PERSON LEAVES THE MUNICIPALITY, DEIB WORK WILL NOT DISAPPEAR WITH THEM.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT MEANS THAT WE'RE DOING WHAT OUR CONSTITUENTS ARE ASKING OF US.

SO, PRIORITY AREA ONE IS ESTABLISHING AN ONGOING SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURE.

AND WE, AND, YOU KNOW, Y'ALL HAVE ALREADY DONE SOME OF THESE THINGS.

FILL THE CURRENT OPEN COMMISSION POSITIONS BECAUSE WHEN I CAME TO MEET WITH Y'ALL IN THE SUMMER, YOU KNOW, THERE'S LIKE MAYBE OR THREE OPEN POSITIONS, YOU KNOW, ON THE COMMISSION.

AND I LOVE THAT YOU NOW HAVE, YOU KNOW, SEVEN ENGAGED ACTIVE MEMBERS.

UH, WE WANNA RENAME IT, UH, THE DIVERSITY EQUITY INCLUSION AND BELONGING COMMISSION, UH, THAT OVER TIME SO WE CAN LOOK AT WORK IN 2025, IS TO, UH, HAVE AN EXPANDED WORKING GROUP THAT NOT ONLY INCLUDES THIS GROUP, BUT CITY STAFF, MAYBE MEMBERS OF THE BUSINESS, COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT CONNECTIONS, AND MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE GENERATIONAL VOICES, UH, AT THE TABLE, UH, THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO USE SURVEYS, YOU KNOW, TO MEASURE THE OVERALL CITIZEN FEELINGS.

AND WE SHOULD ESTABLISH AN ONGOING SYSTEM OF ANNUAL REVIEW OF PROGRESS.

AND SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT DOING AN EXECUTION PLAN IN 2025, WE CAN SEE, SO WE CAN KINDA MAKE SOME GOALS OF WHAT WE WANNA DO IN THESE AREAS.

UH HMM.

I THOUGHT I HAD, OKAY.

UH, PRIORITY AREA TWO, UH, IS TO ENSURE FULL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT, UH, IN THIS WORK.

UH, AND, YOU KNOW, WE CAN WORK OVER TIME, YOU KNOW, SLICE THE DATA BY DEMOGRAPHICS AND ALSO MAKE SURE THAT WE DO THESE, UH, SURVEYS OF THE GENERAL CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS THAT WE REPORT BACK TO THE RESIDENTS, WHAT WE'RE DOING, ESPECIALLY IF THERE'S DIVERSITY ITEMS THAT COME UP.

AND THAT IF WE ANALYZE, YOU KNOW, QUESTIONS BY DEMOGRAPHICS LIKE, ARE, YOU KNOW, WOMEN OR MEN THINK DIFFERENTLY OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE CITY?
